How to Get the Perfect Headshot

The photos on your website and social profiles shouldn’t be an afterthought.

The purpose of a headshot is to introduce your personality and make a great first impression on your audience/customers.

Do’s and Don’ts:

  • DON’T overly airbrush/edit the photos (you want to be authentic/relatable)
  • DO update your headshot every 3-5 years
  • DO have a plan:
    • Choose location(s) or backdrops
    • Choose the tone (Portrait headshots are more formal/professional and usually has a plain backdrop, whereas editorial headshots are informal, may contain props, and the setting can be anything from a mountain to your kitchen.)
    • Plan for portrait and landscape shots (will allow for more flexibility on website and collateral)
    • Plan multiple outfits
    • Plan hair and makeup (if applicable)
    • Bring props (if applicable)
    • Pack a “go bag” (hairspray, brush, lint roller, water, snacks, etc.)
  • DO ask for referrals for photographers. Be sure to read through the contract and compare pricing. If you are in the Volusia County area, I recommend Genesis Photographics.
  • DO take a variety of shots, both vertical and horizontal, and in multiple outfits.
